Troy and Roma Jean Backhuus

Dr. Troy and Roma Jean Backhuus are missionaries with One Mission Society, serving in Missionary Care. Troy is the director of Missionary Care, and Roma Jean is a missionary care specialist. 

Troy and Roma Jean met at Nebraska Christian College, have three adult daughters, and are now proud grandparents of their first grandchild. The Lord has blessed them with the opportunity to do short-term mission trips for more than 20 years, and for the past 4 years, they have felt the Lord’s calling to concentrate their efforts on caring for missionaries who are on the field.

Troy earned his bachelor’s degree in Christian education and pastoral ministries, a master’s degree in counseling, and a Ph.D. in counseling education and supervision. Troy has taught in higher education and has been a professional counselor for the past 14 years. Previously, he served in two churches as a children’s minister. Troy has a passion for helping missionaries and training others in missionary care. He is excited about serving with OMS and partnering with missionaries to further the kingdom of God.

Roma Jean has a long history of elder care, including experience as an activity coordinator and a volunteer coordinator in nursing homes and as an in-home caregiver. She was the vice president, president, and board member of a local homeschool group while homeschooling their three daughters and was the nursery coordinator in her local church. She has a passion for helping and supporting others in need so they may be fully equipped to do the work of God and looks forward to using that passion at OMS.

The Backhuus family loves to spend time together, whether it is serving together, camping together, or having a weekly family dinner together.
