Helping Kids Be Kids

Japan Sports Ministry Equipment

Being a kid in Japan is hard work. Because education and success are important in Japanese culture, many parents put their kids in both regular school and college preparatory school, called juku, to make sure their kids have a bright future.

Kids are also encouraged to join clubs that meet before or after school. This means they don’t have a lot of time to just be a kid or even play with other kids.

In 2019, One Mission Society missionary Lindsay Ohler began partnering with a church in Tokyo to reach Japanese youth through playing sports.

Every week from Tuesday through Saturday, she opens the basketball court on the OMS campus so children can take a break from their studies to play basketball and other sports.

Through sports, Lindsay builds friendships with the kids and their families so she can share Jesus with them.

The sports ministry in Tokyo creates a safe space where kids can have fun and interact with Christians. Over time, they begin to ask questions, which creates conversations about the one true God. Students often want to practice speaking English too.

Through the One Mission Kids MAX BOOM! program, we have an opportunity to encourage young people in Japan by providing them with athletic equipment, sports drinks, Gospel tracts, and special outreach events.

For every $35 raised, we can help purchase one week of sports drinks and a new basketball, foam baseball, or other sports equipment. For every $1,000 we raise, we can supply everything needed—food, prizes, and Gospel tracts— for OMS to hold four special events for kids.

We’re excited to see what God will do through you!
