Although I only began my internship with One Mission Society a few weeks ago, I have already seen the importance of prayer at OMS. Prayer is at the center of the organization, both physically and spiritually.
When you enter the lobby at the One Mission Society World Headquarters in Greenwood, Indiana, you can look directly ahead from the entrance to see the prayer chapel. This room is dedicated to coming to the Lord in prayer, as the Bible calls us to do in Colossians 4:2, when Paul commands us to “Continue steadfastly in prayer” (ESV).
The room is not just coincidentally located in front and center of the building, but rather, it was purposefully placed there. OMS designed the building around the fact that the prayer room was to be at its center. This symbolizes the importance of prayer and its crucial role in the mission at OMS.
A map on the wall in the prayer chapel allows people to visually see the countries they may be praying for or even place their hand on a specific country as they pray. This type of intentionality in prayer is vital, and OMS ensures that it provides the space for it.
Chapel is held weekly at OMS on Wednesday mornings, and monthly, the chapel service focuses solely on prayer. During my first week here, I had the opportunity to attend this gathering for the first time and participate in it myself.
We prayed for the summer interns, including myself, who all began on May 19, and for the Embarkers (mid-term mission experience for younger people), serving in five countries. We also prayed for specific opportunities available at OMS, that the Lord would prepare the hearts of the people he has planned for them. We closed with a prayer for our missionaries who have been sent out in the past year, as they fulfill God’s call on their lives.
Prayer being at the forefront of an organization is a rare find, but it is essential. I am grateful to be part of an organization that prioritizes prayer and places it at the center of all they do.
