Jorge Benavides, camp director at One Mission Society’s (OMS) Camp Peña de Horeb in Spain, worked as a teacher in Colombia until the Lord called him and his wife, Claudia Fonseca, to full-time ministry with OMS.
After serving for several years in their local church in Colombia, Jorge and Claudia felt the Lord calling them to a greater commitment, one that would take them beyond their homeland. They prayed over this for a long time and felt an undeniable pull in their hearts. Before long, they saw the Lord’s hand clearly opening doors for them to serve in Spain.
Seven years ago, in obedience to that call, they arrived in Spain. They worked in various jobs and served alongside local churches until, three years ago, God led them to Camp Peña de Horeb, where he continues to use them today. The camp plays a vital role in bringing the Gospel to Spain and sharing the hope of Jesus Christ.
“We believe the camp is a bridge between the church and the local community,” Jorge explains. “When we do activities with churches, we invite many people who are not believers or who have never heard the Gospel before. The camp becomes a place where they can hear and experience it. And then, when they hear the Gospel and believe in Jesus Christ, we direct those young people to churches in their own communities.”
For the past two years, Jorge and Claudia have also organized children’s camps, welcoming kids from surrounding villages. Many of their families are not yet believers, but they trust the camp and eagerly send their children each summer. The children return home joyful, already looking forward to returning the following year.
Jorge and Claudia are deeply grateful to OMS donors and partner churches for making the ministry of Camp Peña de Horeb possible.
“The Lord has been generous through so many donors and churches that send their resources that make it possible to care for and sustain the camp,” Jorge says. “But most importantly, we see the Lord working in the hearts of each camper. When campers come and hear the Gospel, meet the Lord for the first time, and give their lives to the Lord here, we understand why Peña de Horeb is so close to God’s heart.”
