Growing up, church camp was my summer rhythm for more than a decade, whether as a student or counselor. Camp is where I accepted Jesus as my Savior, where I grew both emotionally and spiritually, and where I began to recognize that I can meet God in the outdoors.
When I visited One Mission Society’s (OMS) Camp Peña de Horeb in Spain, I felt like I was at home. It reminded me just how powerfully the Lord’s presence can be experienced in a place like camp. Located on the banks of the Tajo River near Auñon, Guadalajara, Camp Peña de Horeb spans 17 acres of beauty. As a camp and conference center, it creates a welcoming environment where people can fellowship and hear the Gospel in a loving and familiar place.
The camp is home to a chapel, dining hall, amphitheater, and pool, among other spaces. Beyond these central spaces, however, a few niche spots stand out as especially meaningful. Here are three unique places where, in my experience, you can meet God at Camp Peña de Horeb:
- The Roman Bridge (el puente romano)
OMS missionary in Estonia, Colleen Weaver, shared that the Roman Bridge is a nearby bridge where campers or conference-goers take in the beauty of creation and spend intentional time with God. Built in the 15th century, the bridge stands as a quiet witness to generations past. The long, winding river view framed by mountains and trees begs for quiet time with the Lord. Sitting on the bridge and watching the water flow reminds us of the new life we have in Christ. As Revelation 22:1 says, “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.”
2. The dining hall (el comedor)

At first thought, the dining hall seems like a purely practical space. However, around those brown dining hall tables, you’ll find community—shared meals, devotions, and laughter. Amid the conversations and warm food, God teaches fellowship, joy, and unity. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
3. The tower (la torre)
Overlooking the camp, the tower offers a peaceful view of creation from a high vantage point. Inside, you'll find a room set for prayer or small groups. Climbing the steep stairs leads to the top, fitted with additional seating. It’s an ideal place for prayer, reflection, and solitude. Looking out over the hills and mountains reminds us of the Lord’s strength and of the one who made it all. Psalm 121:1-2 says, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
Whether sitting by the river, gathering around a table in the dining hall, or standing atop the tower at Camp Peña de Horeb, it is a place where God’s Word comes alive against the backdrop of his creation. This camp has been a place of deep transformation. I hope you’ll one day experience its beauty and impact for yourself.
