ABOUT US

WHAT WE DO

HOPE61 mobilizes the church around the world to stop all forms of human trafficking. Our trainers help churches worldwide use the talents, abilities, and resources they already have to prevent human trafficking by addressing vulnerabilities that lead to trafficking. The local church has a unique opportunity and responsibility to address vulnerability in its community.

HOPE61 offers two types of training for local churches, ENGAGE and EMPOWER. We offer a third training, MULTIPLY, to equip new trainers to lead ENGAGE trainings. At it's core, HOPE61 is an evangelism and discipleship catalyst aimed directly at those who are vulnerable to becoming involved in human trafficking.

HOW IT STARTED

HOPE61 was founded in 2010 by One Mission Society missionary Joyce Oden. After pastoring 20 years in the United States, Joyce and her husband, Bill, joined OMS, serving for more than 40 years in several international and homeland assignments, including 17 years in the Philippines. During her time in the Philippines, Joyce witnessed atrocities that she knew were wrong, but not until she returned to the U.S. in the early 2000s did she have words for what she had been seeing: human trafficking.

Following this revelation, God called her to respond. After inquiring and learning that OMS did not yet have a ministry dedicated to responding to the issue of human trafficking, Joyce, with the help of several OMS summer interns, began HOPE61 as a ministry of OMS. Those early days of HOPE61 required significant fundraising and many speaking engagements, both of which Joyce was uniquely gifted for.

By 2011, Joyce recognized that she did not have the stamina to keep up with the increasing demands of the ministry and began praying for a husband and wife team to take over her role. In October of that year, she met Tom and Tonya Overton. Within a month of learning about HOPE61 and the growing issue of human trafficking, God called Tom and Tonya to missionary service with OMS to serve in leadership for HOPE61. Tom became the global director of HOPE61 in September 2012, and Tonya joined him the following year.

Working in tandem, they traveled to many of the OMS fields, learning about the issue of human trafficking and about the unique make ups of the various fields of service. During this time, God made clear to them that HOPE61 should focus solely on prevention and that the work would happen through local churches around the world.

In 2014, the HOPE61 team created a new curriculum to help fulfill the vision of human trafficking prevention. With it, the local church would be equipped and encouraged to reach out to the community around it to effect change regarding human trafficking and to reach that community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The curriculum became known as ENGAGE, and to date, more than 35,000 people across 6 continents have been trained through ENGAGE to prevent human trafficking in their communities.

In 2021, Tom assumed other responsibilities within OMS, and Darren Sweeney, who joined the HOPE61 team in 2018, became the global director of HOPE61. Tonya continues in leadership for HOPE61 alongside Darren.

We give God all the glory and honor for all that he has done, and continues to do, through the ministry of HOPE61 to impact communities around the world!
