Sylvia and Bob Ellis

For 41 years, from 1961 to 2002, Sylvia (Knapp) Ellis served in Taiwan as a missionary with One Mission Society. Her ministry included teaching at Morrison Academy, a school for missionaries’ children; teaching English in churches and on a radio broadcast; leading Bible studies for students; and assisting with evangelistic rallies and special events. She was also involved in a camping ministry and had a strong music ministry in the local church and at Central Taiwan Theological College and Seminary in Taichung.

Sylvia holds a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language. From 2003 to 2005, she served in Asia as a teacher and administrator in a language school.

In 2007, Sylvia married Bob Ellis, a former pastor who, in 1997, began traveling across the U.S., visiting Christian colleges and seminaries, making known the need and the opportunities for godly chaplains in the United States military. During his 18 years in this ministry, Bob saw more than 70 young men surrender to the chaplaincy. He visited over 400 churches, preaching and promoting the chaplaincy ministry. Sylvia often had opportunities to minister in music and to share about Taiwan in the children’s programs or in Christian day schools.

In June of 2016, Bob stepped down from the chaplaincy ministry and began serving with a fund that helps young Mexican “preacher boys” to complete Bible school and plant churches in Mexico. This ministry has seen good growth thus far.

Sylvia is involved in their local church through the choir and orchestra and occasionally plays the piano. She does secretarial work for Bob and assists with his ministry to various church groups. Correspondence plays a major part in her daily routine, and she finds joy in maintaining contacts both at home and abroad. She and Bob praise the Lord for giving them good health and opportunities to serve him.
