David and Melissa Cheeks

David Cheeks serves with One Mission Society as a church multiplication facilitator (CMF). As such, David comes alongside the national leaders of Africa to encourage and coach them toward the fruitful planting of multiplying churches. David travels to Africa three to four times each year for a few weeks each time to provide coaching, encouragement, prayer support, accountability, and vision casting to village church planters, trainers, and other leaders as needed. Currently, David relates to the leadership in South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. The particular focus of church planting targets the regions and the villages of Africa that are isolated and have not yet had the opportunity to hear and respond to the Good News of Christ, for the Scripture says: “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?” (Romans 10:14-15a)

After 34 years of serving as a pastor to the Lord’s people in the United States, David sensed the Lord speaking to him about becoming a missionary. This thought was initially perplexing to him, but in the days and weeks to follow, through prayer, contemplation and counsel, he came to understand that the heart of God is to send his people to help those who long to hear a word of hope and that God is still asking the question to whomever might hear it: “Whom shall I send?” So at a time in life when many might be contemplating retirement, David expresses, “My life is soaring with great anticipation about what God is doing in our present day and how he gracefully invites us into his great adventure. It is my hope that all believers might hear his voice and step forward to be of the sent ones.”

David was wed to his partner in ministry, Melissa, in 1979. They reside in Florence, Kentucky. They have served churches in Indiana, Missouri, and Kentucky. They have three sons: Jonathan who is married to Amy, Matthew who is married to Lydia, and Nathaniel. David earned his undergraduate degree from Morehead State University and his master of divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary.
