Train & Multiply: On the Right Track

April 7 2015

Last week, we introduced you to Train & Multiply. This church multiplication method has been used in amazing ways to advance the kingdom of God.

But how exactly does T&M work?

One important distinction between T&M and other discipleship programs is its emphasis on leadership development. While the 64 booklets include resources on evangelism and discipleship, its strength lies in the development of healthy, well-equipped leaders, who are essential to a church multiplication movement. Without solid leadership to guide new church plants, multiplication will be slow and ineffective.

Here is an illustration of the Train & Multiply process:

One rail is labeled “pastoral work.” Every person involved in T&M is also involved in some form of ministry. It might be a simple church, a small group, or simply working with their family and friends. They have some place to immediately apply what they are learning. T&M is not training for ministry, it is training in ministry.

The second rail is labeled “home study.” A T&M participant learns through weekly study of God’s Word, the T&M pastoral worker training booklets, and practical experience. T&M booklets are simple and practical biblical training guides. They are easily accessible. They can be used anywhere, at any time, with any number of people. And they only cost what it takes to print them.

But what ties this all together are the railroad ties labeled “meeting with trainer.” Each T&M participant has a trainer who provides coaching and mentoring. Meeting biweekly or monthly, this trainer guides the participant through the leadership development process. They help the student plant their pastoral work and choose what to study. The trainer also encourages and holds the participant accountable.

CPM - Second Week

August 13 2013

CPM - Second Week

We are in the second week of the CPM Workshop at OMS Headquarters. Participants serving in many different cultures are challenged to pick a process and create a plan to implement upon their return to their field of ministry. Some have decided upon Train and Multiply (T&M) and others Training for Trainers (T4T).

Pictured above is the 2013 Church Planting Movements Group; delegates, facilitators and prayer warriors. The Lord always brings the right people at the right time for training to move His kingdom forward. Please keep this group in your prayers as they work on their ministry plans this week and begin implementing them in the days, weeks and years to come.

What Is Your Process?

August 9 2013

What Is Your Process?

And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. 2 Tim 2:2

ECC trains, facilitates and coaches on 3 church planting processes: Training for Trainers (T4T), Train and Multiply (T&M), and Village Church Planting (VCP). This week we will focus on 2 of those; T4T & T&M.

Bill Smith will train on T4T, a CM process that has seen tens of thousands of churches started and hundreds of thousands of people, who never know Jesus come to know Him, love Him and obey Him.

Jim Hogrefe, David Guillen and Dean Davis will be leading us through the T&M CM process which likewise has been used of God on 5 continents to start tens of thousands of worshiping groups.

Why T4T?  -  It weaves all of the aspects of church planting into one connected process that is obedience based and easy to pass on to others.  In the T4T process, evangelism, follow up, discipleship, forming groups into churches, and training of trainers who will serve as biblical leaders for the new churches are integrated.  The stress is placed on the training of trainers because the trainers pass along everything they know, while in some cases leaders seek to use what they know to reinforce the need for others to follow.

Why T&M?  -  Train and Multiply is a disciple making, leadership training, multiplication process that helps ordinary Christians win people to Christ, make disciples, and start new groups of Christ followers which can grow, be healthy and multiply. It is made up of 63 training booklets using a menu approach to help meet the needs of the church. Training pastoral workers and teaching them to obey the commands of Jesus is the key; God is at the heart and multiplication is the result.

We will challenge participants to select a process, put it in to their context and develop a master plan for implementation once they arrive or return to their area of ministry. Please pray for these groups of people to hear from the Lord about which process to use.

I see DOTS! (12 Principles of Church Multiplication)

1. Which of the principles listed below has helped you the most in your ministry so far?

2. Which one of the following principles do you most want to investigate in order to apply it in your context?

–Fervent Prayer

–Abundant gospel sowing

–Intentional church planting

–Scriptural authority

–Local leadership

–Lay leadership

–Cell or house churches

–Churches planting churches

–Rapid reproduction

–Healthy churches

–Rapid incorporation of new believers into the life and ministry of the church

–On-the-job training for church leadership

We see these principles applied in the book of Acts. As we consider the people in our zone of influence, we think about what they will need (the things that only God can provide) in their lives. We pray for God's greatness and love in the lives of these people (Chr. 16). We pray for His ability and willingness to draw lost people to Himself and save them (Mk 9).

And we pray for multitudes to hear the Word of the Lord and for many thousands to come to faith in Jesus and follow him as disciples (Acts 16).

Multiply the Well

July 30 2013

Multiply the Well

Kenel Clovis Claudion, a professor in elementary school, was recommended by Pastor Exalus of Port Margo mother church to be a church planter. He planted a station at Bois Gauche in the area of Port Margo.  They meet in the courtyard of the parents of Luxima Cassandra.

Trainer Janiel has trained Kenel for three years. An Uncle of Kenel died through magic of Voodoo.  The same people who killed his uncle wanted to kill him also.

After Kenel’s uncle died on Wednesday night 17 August 2011, he was sleeping. He woke up suddenly as if a dog had barked.  He said “Lord, take control of me”.

Some minutes later he felt his body had been hit hard on his left leg.  He cried “Hallelujah, Hallelujah!  When he got up in the morning his left leg was swollen and very painful. These same events happened also the nights of August 19 and 26.  He thought he was going to die.  He talked with his Trainer Janiel so he could pray with him.  They PRAYED! After this the attacks ceased.

At this time they were studying the building of the wall by Nehemiah from the Train and Multiply booklet # 20. Kenel came to realize that even though the enemy was persecuting him he needed to stand fast in his faith.   God was working for him.

He said “Through ECC I find support in my walk with Christ and through Train and Multiply, I have a greater desire to announce the Good News and put God’s word into practice.” Kenel said, “I am praying to God that this program will touch the world”. Please pray with us that this ministry will be very fruitful in my area of Bois Gauche.”

The situation now:

He has married and continues in the ministry.  There are now 38 people attending the Bois Gauche Station meetings.  Kenel has trained a young woman, Luxima Cassandra who has planted a station at Bertin with a mother and four children who to this time have not yet accepted Christ.  She is also training Doudalande.

God continues to multiply disciples through the lives of His faithful servants.

Vision for South Pacific

May 17 2013

Vision for South Pacific

OMS is blessed with wonderful partners around the world who have been planting churches for a long time. It has been my privilege to work this week with our partner in the islands of the South Pacific.

Our agenda is to pave the way for traditional churches that meet in church buildings and have seminary trained pastors to plant simple, multiplying churches that meet in homes and are led by bi-vocational pastors who, as life long learners, receive on the job training.  Sounds daunting doesn't it?

But the joy and the passion of these pastors to empower their members to do great things for God is very encouraging. They have cleared the way for bi-vocational leaders to be authorized to baptize and serve the Lord's Supper: a very big deal in Asia. They greatly appreciate OMS' help in providing Train and Multiply training. And there have been some breakthroughs lately in places where the traditional religion has held sway for years.

I leave here with a great appreciation for the deep love that national church leaders have for OMS and OMS leaders have for them. And I have every confidence that in the South Pacific as in the Caribbean, traditional churches who love the lost can empower their members to multiply disciples, leaders and churches, even in the face of oppressive social pressures. It's ahoy to partner with these dear brothers and sisters!

Who will fulfill the great commission? Is God calling you to give financially, go in faith, or pray fervently?

Final Days in India

March 25 2013

Final Days in India

Yesterday I spent 1½ hours with the top leaders of our ECI church. These men are visionary pioneers who have seen God grow the ECI to over 3500 congregations. As OMS field director I had a list of items to discuss with them. God knit our hearts together with open and heartfelt sharing. Although I am just an ordinary fellow from Middlefield, the Lord seems pleased to let me serve at this time. I also spent time with Dr. Onesimu, the principal of our Chennai Bible Seminary. A former student of mine from the early 80s, he and I have a special relationship. He shared some personal challenges he faces, but is determined to press forward. His vision includes reaching new areas of Chennai with the Good News.

On Sunday, I preached in his church and he translated. Many were moved by God’s command for us to lovingly reach out to people around us still without Jesus. After the service Glenda and I met with 10 young adults and challenged them to pursue obedience to God’s will for their futures. One young lady now in university wants to work among women trapped in the sex trade. Her father, Panneer, works with World Vision, ministering among street children and disabled kids.

I’ve mentioned several dreams and a vision for the future. In each one of our lives  God is inviting us to discover and fulfill his design for our days here on Earth. The first step is to ask God. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.” I pray that your life will bring much joy in the service of Christ as you step out in faith to fulfill your own dreams!

This journey to India is nearly complete. Our ministry has been fruitful; the stories of God at work are many. Your prayers have played a vital part in enabling God’s Spirit to touch lives. Thank you for standing at our side! The harvest, said Jesus, is ready and ripe. Today is God’s moment for India. There is much work yet to be done!

Yours for the unreached of India,

Roger & Glenda

One Faith Multiplied

January 14 2013

One Faith Multiplied

Note: part one is posted January 7, 2013

After many years of fruitful ministry in Ecuador, Enrique suffered a pre-stroke. He and Esther “retired” and moved in with son David. After his health was restored, he started serving in David’s church. Eventually, a vision for a larger church emerged and in 2006, at the age of 70, Enrique and Esther planted a new church in Naranjito.

Enrique continues to be a learner, and in this new ministry in Naranjito, he has captured from his son David, a church planter in Spain, the vision of establishing a network of house churches that work together to multiply themselves.

During a Sunday service when Bill Miller was in Ecuador preaching at the Rosa de Sarón church in Naranjito, Enrique and Esther’s son David went to the altar and surrendered his life to the call that God had placed upon him. That moment of yielding to the Spirit resulted in the extension of Enrique’s ministry across oceans and into places he would never see.

The impact of Pastor Enrique’s life and ministry on his son David has resulted in an ever-widening circle of leadership training and church planting, a movement that spans the Atlantic to reach Europe and return with renewed vigor into Ecuador. David Guillén leads a church planting network called “Peace and Hope,” based in Spain but stretching into Bulgaria, Portugal, Ecuador and various immigrant communities. The amazing ways that God is using David and his wife Gardenia are a direct result of a father’s example and investment in his son’s life.

We asked David about his father’s influence on his life. He highlighted four aspects of Enrique’s example that continue to be formative for him:

1. A personal commitment and love for God and unwavering obedience to His call

2. A pioneer, someone who sees congregations where no one else can see them

3. His father’s response to suffering and personal injustice.

4. Enrique’s personal life is without reproach; he lives daily into the scriptural command to be holy as the Lord your God is holy (Lev 11:44)

With the prayers, help and encouragement from ECC, God is now using David and Gardenia to multiply the faith of Enrique in these many countries and among these many people groups.

OMS recently published the book these blogs were taken from entitled, One Faith Multiplied.

If you would like a copy of the book, you may purchase it on Amazon.
